What is Nutritional Therapy

Nutritional Therapy: A personalised approach

Nutritional therapy is an evidence-based complementary therapy that applies the latest research in nutrition and health sciences to your unique symptoms and health goals. Whether you’re looking to optimise your wellbeing or address specific concerns, nutritional therapy can support you both now and in the future.

What Does a Nutritional Therapist Do?

Nutritional therapists take a personalised, holistic approach to health. They focus on understanding the root cause of your symptoms by assessing potential nutritional imbalances and crafting simple, effective nutrition and lifestyle plans to improve the way you feel.

Because everyone is different—different problems, goals, and responses to nutrition—there is no universal diet that suits all. That’s why a tailored plan is essential.

A good nutritional therapist takes time to listen to your medical history, current symptoms, preferences, and lifestyle. These factors are all crucial in designing a plan that works for you. They may also recommend targeted supplements to support specific health conditions or goals, ensuring safe and cost-effective choices. Additionally, coaching may be incorporated to help you overcome challenges and build sustainable habits.

Who Can Benefit from Nutritional Therapy?

Nutritional therapy can support individuals experiencing a variety of health concerns, including:

  • Hormonal imbalances (perimenopause, menopause)
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Weight management
  • IBS and digestive issues
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Poor sleep
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Food intolerances
  • Pre-diabetes and high blood pressure
  • Joint pain and inflammation
  • Mood swings and brain fog
  • General wellness improvements

It's important to note that nutritional therapy does not diagnose, treat, or cure medical conditions, but it plays a vital role in supporting overall health alongside medical professionals.

How to Know if Nutritional Therapy is Right for You?

To help you decide, I offer a free 30-minute health and energy review call. This is an opportunity to discuss your needs, learn about my approach, and determine if nutritional therapy is the right fit for you.

What Happens in a Nutrition Consultation?

Your first consultation lasts up to 90 minutes. Beforehand, you'll complete a nutritional therapy questionnaire. During the session, we’ll discuss your medical history, health goals, eating habits, and lifestyle factors. Everything shared is confidential, and there's no judgment—just practical, achievable guidance.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

My nutritional therapy and coaching packages run over 10 weeks. This structure ensures ongoing support, allowing you to implement changes at a comfortable pace and address any challenges along the way.

Where Do the Consultations Take Place?

All consultations are conducted online via Zoom for convenience and accessibility, or in person for PRISM Health Assessments.

Will I Need Any Tests?

In some cases, functional nutrition tests may be recommended to identify underlying issues contributing to your symptoms. These tests can assess nutrient status, hormone imbalances, or other clinical markers. Testing is only suggested when it adds value to your personalised plan.

Note: The cost of functional testing is separate from consultation fees. If significant concerns arise, you will be referred to your GP.

Understanding the Difference: Nutritional Therapists, Nutritionists, and Dietitians

Choosing the right professional for your nutritional needs can be confusing, as the terms are often used interchangeably. Here’s a breakdown:

Dietitians

  • Educated to degree level in dietetics
  • Typically work within the NHS or medical teams
  • Can diagnose, treat, and prescribe certain medications
  • Specialise in clinical conditions such as kidney disease, diabetes, and gastrointestinal disorders
  • Require GP or health professional referral for NHS access

Nutritional Therapists

  • Apply research-based nutrition to support health and wellbeing
  • Focus on personalised, holistic approaches to address symptoms
  • Offer tailored dietary and lifestyle recommendations
  • May suggest functional testing to assess nutritional imbalances
  • Cannot diagnose or prescribe medication

Important: Anyone can call themselves a "Nutritional Therapist," as the title is not legally protected. Ensure your therapist is registered with BANT (British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine) or CNHC (Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council). Registered practitioners undergo accredited training and continuous professional development.

Nutritionists

  • Work in diverse fields including health clinics, food industry, and research
  • May not always work with individuals directly
  • Like nutritional therapists, "Nutritionist" is not a legally protected title
  • Seek a Registered Nutritionist to ensure accredited qualifications
  • Can also register with BANT and CNHC

Take Control of Your Health

Nutritional therapy is a proactive approach to enhancing wellbeing. Whether you’re dealing with specific symptoms or want to future-proof your health, working with a registered nutritional therapist ensures you receive expert, evidence-based guidance tailored to your needs.

Tree of life. Body systems. How our health is effected by our environment. Gut health, mental health

Health is our energy, our sleep, our digestion and vitality. It is the way we embrace the world around us.

Focusing on weight, or a set number on the scale, are not specific ways to measure overall health. Having low levels of body fat does not offer you absolute  protection from disease and higher levels of body fat does not automatically mean you have disease.

Individual factors like genetics, past stress events, past sleeping patterns, life stages, exercise levels, toxic load, gut health.... these all play a part in determining your health outcomes.

By working with a Nutritional Therapist you are hand led through identifying triggers and mediators that might be causing your symptoms. You are supported with making changes and monitoring outcome.
